I’ve been in real estate a long time and started The Brian Kondo Real Estate Team shortly after I received my license.
It was the mid 90’s and we received a call from Dave and Kendra. Dave was considering a new job and wanted advice on selling their home and buying in another province.
When we met, I presented them with an up-to-date, comprehensive home evaluation and showed them how my home selling system would help them sell fast, with little hassle and for top dollar. They were happy with everything up to that point but were worried about buying from afar and finding a good agent.
I explained that Re/Max has a huge referral directory that they update monthly and send to each office for the agents to use to refer their clients. (Note - that was about 30 years ago - nowadays it’s even easier and better. The over 100,000 agents in the worldwide Re/Max network is at our fingertips since the directory is now online. If one of our clients needs the services of an agent outside our service area, my assistant, Ginette, conducts an exhaustive search. She checks their profile on the Re/Max site, checks the agent’s website and calls them to ask what they specialize in, how their business works etc. If it looks like the agent is a good fit for our client(s), she sets up the referral).
Anyway, they told me they interviewed other agents but at the end of our meeting, they said if Dave accepted the job, they would use my team to sell their home and to find them a suitable agent in the province they were moving to.
About 2 weeks later, Kendra called to tell me Dave turned down the job. Regardless, she said they were very happy with me and my team and when the time comes to sell, they will be calling me. I kept in touch with periodic calls and by mailing them my monthly newsletter, Market Watch, which contains sales stats and my take on the current market. (Note - I’ve been sending this newsletter to my clients on a monthly basis for over 25 years).
Well, Dave and Kendra must have been really impressed with me when we initially met. That and the newsletters I was sending them because 20 years later they called to say they were retiring and moving to their cottage. I assigned Mike Koson to give them another up-to-date and comprehensive evaluation. They listed, we started our exclusive Home Selling System and we sold their home firm in just 9 days for 101% of the asking price in a slow market!
